Sticks & Stones

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Coming back from Chicago last night very early this morning I found the July issue of Maxim waiting in my mailbox, and inside a fun image of Tampa Bay Rays stud Evan Longoria for their monthly Celeb Obsession spot. Evan was super fun to hang out with and gave us great energy which makes my job easy. Seriously… laid back athlete + drum kit + LOUD rock music + devil horns! = rad. If you were wondering, Evan needs to practice his stick tossing skills a little more.

It’s tough to say this because I’m a life-long Yankees fan, but I really love photographing and spending time with Rays players (for non-baseball fans, NYY/TAM are locked in a dead heat for 1st place in the AL East). Each current or past Ray I’ve met has just been good people, and really, really nice.

Maybe one of the nicest people I’ve ever photographed (period) is David Price, ace of the Rays rotation, who I also shot for Maxim during spring training last year. The magazine was looking for an edgy vibe from this phenom hurler who had just helped win the World Series as a rookie, but David would not stop smiling like it was school picture day. “David, dude!, you got to stop smiling… stare me down like I’m the hitter…we want you to look fierce!” I’m trying to but I just like to smile, David said. Smile or not (and obviously he eventually got in the zone on our shoot) Price is having an fine season and deserves it.

Long weekend

Happy memorial day weekend from John Loomis Photography! Have a safe and sunny time whether you find yourself at some glamourous beach locale or maybe just in your own backyard.

Luau

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

A quick one before I catch a flight with my better half to enjoy a couple of weeks of road tripping and camping out West! . . .

Recently published as part of a cover story on Apple Inc., above are two portraits of former Apple (& Pepsi Co) CEO John Sculley shot last month for Der Spiegel. And a bit more fun, here are another couple of snaps from my littlest sister’s recent engagement party, which of course had a luau theme. Much love and congrats to you, Carli & Ralph!

JLP HQ will be back mid-month with some new work and probably a tan.

The Blue Pages

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

We have a rule here at John Loomis Photography HQ: if we’re family and you create something cool then it’s photo shoot time. baby! My cousin (wearing the tie) is in a band – Boston-based funksters The Blue Pages – and they have created some super fun retro/modern dance party music… so last week we rolled out to Brooklyn to put together some new visuals for their upcoming album, tour, and anything else they have up their sleeves. The gents are a fun bunch and we spent a lot of time trading our best pick-up lines in between huffing it up to the rooftop and around the borrowed loft.

So check out The Blue Pages on tour in a city near you — such as a gig at The Studio at Webster Wall in NYC on May 10 (tickets here) — and support the family. Many thanks to Brian Harkin for giving us some help and love, and look out for some video action upcoming that Brian and I worked on together during the shoot. Here are a few more and, of course, a finger dick because that’s just how we roll.

Sun City Center

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Over the past few years Der Spiegel has become a favorite client of JLP both because of the freedom they allow in approach and also simply because most of their stories are really, uh, you know, stories. On top of all of that picture editor Susan Wirth (who works out of the U.S. office for Spiegel) is a great pleasure to work with.

Earlier this week I got word that a previous project for them had finally been published inĀ Wissen, a special edition of Der Spiegel that they publish quarterly, each with a single theme. The most recent topic is retirement and dimentia and I was sent to meet up with rockstar writer Samiha Shafy in the vintage retirement community of Sun City Center, FL, one of the original Del Webb developments from the 1960’s.

Samiha and I spent a few days learning about the community and its focus on living an active lifestyle (these cats keep busy) and how they try to spread a deeper understanding of what dimensia is and how to help those coping and/or caring for those affected, especially with Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to lit portraits I was up before the sun each day to photograph the sizeable list of sports the seniors partake in daily (paddle tennis anyone?), and spent any extra time roaming around the still growing development admiring some of the off-the-hook topiary. In short it was a great time with some very nice people who opened their homes and lives to us. The magazine was really excited with what I brought back and I’m excited to share it now at last. Here are several more that I liked:
