Round 2 of the Grand Circle road trip through the southwest. For the second leg we truck through Canyonlands, Antelope Canyon (seen above, in triptych, looking up into the narrow slot canyon), Grand Canyon, and Black Canyon (Hoover Dam). Not much more to say about this great journey of wide open vistas, still very cool spring weather, bad ass hiking, windstorms, and beauty. Enjoy.
Grand Circle II
May 24th, 2010Grand Circle I
May 17th, 2010JLP is back on the east coast and we had a fantastic road trip through the southwest over the last 2 weeks, camping, hiking, and rafting our way through Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Westwater, Canyonlands, Glen Canyon, Grand Canyon, and the Black Canyon before taking some R&R in Vegas.
This was a vacation so I spent most of the time rocking our new P&S (the rad Canon S90) and not lugging the bigger gear. But there is enough stuff for a 2-part blog post so stay tuned later this week for round 2. Up first is Zion, Bryce, & Arches…
Luau
May 3rd, 2010A quick one before I catch a flight with my better half to enjoy a couple of weeks of road tripping and camping out West! . . .
Recently published as part of a cover story on Apple Inc., above are two portraits of former Apple (& Pepsi Co) CEO John Sculley shot last month for Der Spiegel. And a bit more fun, here are another couple of snaps from my littlest sister’s recent engagement party, which of course had a luau theme. Much love and congrats to you, Carli & Ralph!
JLP HQ will be back mid-month with some new work and probably a tan.
AP 26
April 2nd, 2010American Photography is the only competition that I’ve entered consistently over the past few years, so it was quite a thrill to receive JLP’s first (& 2nd!) honors from the finely-juried annual last week. From our project on the secret life of the Penn State Nittany Lion mascot the jury selected this image (one of only 304 images in the AP 26 annual) of Lion tethered to Earth and his cheerleading colleagues via his increasingly tattered tail. Thanks again to ESPN the Magazine and DoP Catriona Ni Aolain for giving me the great job.
Additionally I’m psyched to have my portrait of golfer Greg Norman and his sun-bespeckled face as he slaps a wedge down range included in the AP website archive as a “chosen” image. The image was shot for and published in Men’s Journal by their excellent DoP Michelle Wolfe.
Of the handful of images I entered last year I would have been extremely hard put to have picked either of them as potential honorees, especially that particular shot from the mascot work, but that’s how it works in contests — and ultimately you are just happy for anyone to have given your work and the stories found within a second look, opening up a new audience to connect. Thanks AP 26 Jury, see you at the party!
The Blue Pages
April 1st, 2010We have a rule here at John Loomis Photography HQ: if we’re family and you create something cool then it’s photo shoot time. baby! My cousin (wearing the tie) is in a band – Boston-based funksters The Blue Pages – and they have created some super fun retro/modern dance party music… so last week we rolled out to Brooklyn to put together some new visuals for their upcoming album, tour, and anything else they have up their sleeves. The gents are a fun bunch and we spent a lot of time trading our best pick-up lines in between huffing it up to the rooftop and around the borrowed loft.
So check out The Blue Pages on tour in a city near you — such as a gig at The Studio at Webster Wall in NYC on May 10 (tickets here) — and support the family. Many thanks to Brian Harkin for giving us some help and love, and look out for some video action upcoming that Brian and I worked on together during the shoot. Here are a few more and, of course, a finger dick because that’s just how we roll.
